10. Hitachi W42H
I would prefer a more glossy look, but the W32H from Hitachi is still a beautiful phone. Each phone comes with some snap-on accessories that can change the looks of it. The phone is available in black, white and orange and three different snap-on accessories.

9. Samsung SGH-E900
The Samsung SGH-E900 was first shown at the CeBIT in Hannover earlier this year and it got quite a lot of attention - especially from the fashion and design oriented media. It’s a true beauty and I guess LG weren’t too happy to see this one only a few months before they introduced their Chocolate model.

8. KDDI Talby by Marc Newson
The Talby is a quite old phone. It was first shown as a product concept back in 2003 and garnered a lot of attention during a couple of years. The Tably is available in three colors, hornet green, orange orange and hole black. The Talby is only available in Japan.

7. O2 Ice
The O2 Ice was actually the phone that was the inspiration to this article. It’s a small stylish 3G phone that has the usual built-in MP3 player, 1.3 megapixel camera, bluetooth etc. It’ll be out in September in the UK for around $200.

6. Samsung SGH-E870
The Samsung SGH-E870 is a nice looking clamshell phone coming in three different colors Chic White, Valentine Pink and Chilli blue. It’s primarily aimed towards girly-girls. Nice design, or what do you say?

5. KDDI Neon by Naoto Fukasawa
The Neon is one of the latest phones coming out from the AU Design project at KDDI. It’s available in three colors, light blue, pink and black. It has a built-in 1.3 megapixel camera, miniSD slot, music player, FM tuner and a 320×240 screen. I love the clean front of this phone!

4. Black Diamond
Black Diamond is a luxury phone that isn’t out on the market yet. It’s supposed to be launched early 2007 from a company called VIPN. On their site they promote a limited edition of the phone made out of titanium and with real diamonds - only $300 000. Crazy.

3. Helio Kickflip
The Helio Kickflip is small and stylish, but it’s still loaded with a 2 megapixel camera, 2.2″ screen (320×240) and 3G capabilities. But most of all - it’s a truly beautiful cellphone!

2. LG KG-800 Chocolate
I have the pleasure of owning a LG Chocolate and it’s a pure beauty. I really love the design of it and it’s one of the most stylish phones you can get at the moment. This phone won the 2006 IF Design Award in Germany.

1. KDDI Penck by Makoto Saito
Yeah, this is my kind of phone. Isn’t it absolutely stunning? The PENCK phone designed by Makoto Saito is one and a half years old, but it’s still the most beautful phone ever made. The PENCK is available in three colors, metal, milk (white), and bitter (black). Too bad it’s only available in Japan.

Honorable mentions
Nokia 8800 Sirocco edition
The Nokia 8800 Sirocco edition hasn’t been officially announced by Nokia yet, so it will only get an honorable mention. It’s expected to have a 2 megapixel camera and all other standard functionality. It will be available in silver and black and will cost around $1000 (!) - quite expensive one.

White Pearl
White Pearl is the little sister of ‘Black Diamond’ featured above. Although it doesn’t look that good in white, it’s worth an honorable mention.

NEC N908
The NEC N908 was shown by NEC in Hong Kong quite recently. It’s a good looking credit card sized that features a 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD card reader, music player etc. Nice one. It’ll be out on the Asian market any day. Even though I’ve only seen this one on this quite ugly picture you can see that this one looks really awesome.

The brick phones
I just wanted to add a bit of perspective to this short article before we round off. It wasn’t that many years ago, well ok 15 years ago, all cellphones looked like the Motorola SUN1660BB featured above. That model is only from 1992…

I live in Japan now and my girlfriend’s sister uses the white version of the Penck. I think the shell is nice but the inside functionality, the menus and the like, are rather bland. But I guess fashion is only skin deep.

Siemens SL75 is from a while back, but still one of the most beautiful phones out there. Comes in all the MacBook matching colors too - Black, Silver, White.

Leider kann man es mit dem Design auch uebertreiben was mit vorallem immer wieder bei Nokia und Sony Ericsson auffaellt. Fosfor Gadgets hat jedenfalls seine 10 schoensten Mobiltelefone gewaehlt, und hier zeigt sich doch wie unterschiedlich die Geschmaecker doch sein koennen. Die meisten der genannten finde ich naemlich ueberhaupt nicht schoen, bzw. da gefallen mit sogar Nokia oder Sony Ericcson Modelle besser die ich sonst eigentlich garnicht mag. Einzig die KDDI Phones KDDI Penck und das KDDI Neon haben irgendwie etwas, vom Menue her finde ich es auch etwas gewoehnungsbeduerftig, liegt aber vermutlich daran das das Modell fuer den japanischen Markt gedacht war. These are all ugly phones. The designers should be fired and anyone responsible for approving them for production slapped. Just because some fool thinks a phone is a little spicy, or slick, jeeez! A beautiful phone must fit the hand comfortably, have ergo controls and intuitive interface and damned functional buttons. Color, shape etc mean nothing if you can’t use the phone single handed and access most functions easily without actually having to study it and use a toothpick to poke at tiny buttons that rarely work anyway.

While that chocolate bar phone is good looking it is one of the worst phones i have ever used. The buttons on the front are touch and its impossible to judge when you have clicked them and then the interface and all the software in general is ugly, unintuitive, and slow as molassas. I think the Sony Ericsson W810 should at least get an honorable mention. Very sexy phone

Siemens SL55. I had one; is small and doesn’t have too many functionalities, but the slider’s lines and the diamond shaped keys were soooo beautiful… I miss it.

I’ve been looking at cellphones for years. But speaking as a amateur radio operator, I must tell you that all of them leave me cold. All these things are, is a trunking microwave transceiver with a dialer. I don’t want a color screen, I don’t want to look at pictures, I don’t want to play music, I don’t want one with digital camera in it. I just want it to be a good radio receiver and transmitter. None of them work well as a radio. Best overall level-ground range is 19 miles. Most of them sound like they are under water because the voice amp AGC works too quickly, or is too primative for digital radio. The receivers are often noisy and add digital artifacts to the sound; total rubbish. The old 900Mhz phones could do well up to 35 miles, and they were analog! We are going backwards. I don’t give a tinkers’ damn how pretty it is, if it doesn’t work well as a phone, it’s just a pretty paper weight. Get over their apperance and understand the truth of the cellphone culture. Virtually every single customer for cell service is a party to a massive fraud. When they have a decent piece of radio gear, I’ll take another look. But right now, I’ll stick with ham gear, the hardware is cheaper, they can make calls through repeaters (FOR NOTHING) and have a range of more than a hundred miles, they hear well and transmit superior quality audio. Oh, and BTW, none of your choices for pretty phones warmed my heart for esthetics either. They are trying to improve their appearance, because they won’t spend money to invent a cellphone that works as a cellphone. Seems kinda funny, doesn’t it?

Interesting discussion here on the meaning of beauty, though. Apparently, paople take it to be anything from firmware functionality over transmission strength to sturdiness.
Personally, I think the best list would consider designs that are aesthetically interesting and novel, while still ‘working’.

O Hitachi W42H, faz mais o estilo dos celulares vendidos no Brasil. E nas cores preto e branco ficou muito bonito. Já os outros modelos expostos aqui, ficou muito difícil de julgar por causa do pouco detalhamento das fotos. Por isso, eu achei mais bonito esse modelo que mencionei acima.
